My Aching Back: A Guide to Low Back Pain

If your back hurts, you’re not alone. As many as 8 out of 10 Americans will experience the misery of back pain at some point in their lives. Back pain that comes on suddenly and lasts a short time (a few days to a few weeks) is called acute back pain. When the pain lasts 3 months or longer, it is called chronic back pain. Back aches are common and painful—but fortunately, they’re rarely serious. Most of the time, back pain improves with simple treatments and some time.
